Algorithm
AES-256-GCM encryption — authenticated encryption with tamper detection built in.
100% private — your file never leaves the device. Powered by Web Crypto API.
310,000 PBKDF2 rounds — key derivation makes brute-force attacks extremely slow.
How to Encrypt & Decrypt
1
Upload Any File
Drag & drop or click to select. Works with any file type — PDF, image, video, ZIP, document.
2
Set a Password
Enter a strong password. 310,000 rounds of PBKDF2 protect it. Random salt + IV each time.
3
Download .sfenc
The encrypted output is a .sfenc blob — reveals nothing about the original file type or contents.
4
Decrypt Anytime
Switch to Decrypt tab, upload .sfenc, enter the password — original file restored instantly.
AES-256-GCM
Authenticated encryption — ciphertext is unreadable; built-in tamper detection via GCM auth tag.
PBKDF2 · 310k
310,000 rounds of PBKDF2-SHA256 key derivation — brute-force attacks are extremely slow.
Random Salt + IV
16-byte salt + 12-byte IV fresh every time — same file + same password = different output each time.
.sfenc blob
File type hidden — the output reveals nothing about the original file type, name, or MIME type.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is SecureFile really free to use?
Yes, 100% free with no sign-up, no limits and no hidden charges. All processing is local in your browser.
Is my file uploaded to any server?
Never. Your file stays on your device. Everything uses the Web Crypto API — no internet connection is needed after the page loads.
What file types can I encrypt?
Any file type — PDF, images, videos, documents, ZIP archives, executables, anything at all. The file type is hidden inside the .sfenc output.
Can the receiver decrypt without this tool?
They need to open this same page and use the Decrypt tab with the correct password. No app install needed — it's browser-based.
What happens if I enter the wrong password?
AES-256-GCM authentication will fail and you'll see an error. The file cannot be decrypted at all without the exact password.
Is there a file size limit?
No server limit — it's bounded by your device's available RAM. Files up to several hundred MB work fine on modern devices.
